At Bull Pass high up in the Henry Mountains, the Hayduke Trail leaves the road and travels south along the Southern Summit Ridge of Mount Ellen. A quick diversion from this same point will lead one in the opposite direction up the Northern Summit Ridge and to the true high point of the Henry Mountains. It’s worth the effort IMHO as it’s an awesome feeling to be on the highest piece of turf for nearly a hundred miles in any direction. A fairly quick two-mile jaunt up tops out at 11,522′ which is just over 100′ higher than the southern summit. It might be tempting to just follow the road and skip either summit, but I’d recommend definitely doing one or the other if not both — the views are great in all directions up on top and much better than at the pass.
